Based on ten conventional breeding herds, the researchers have investigated the causes and conditions of death of spontaneously dead sows in the farrow from April 2018 to June 2019.

A single cause of death has been found to be by far the most frequent:

"The most dominant cause of death was liver rotations. As many as 42 percent of the sows in the project were dead because a liver lobe had turned on its own axis and had caused stasis and tissue death.

In comparison, 17 percent of the autopsied sows had died of farrowing problems, most often because rotten pigs were retained in the uterus. 17 percent of the lakes had died of infections, says Hanne Kongsted, post.doc. at the Department of Animal Science.

The study not only provided greater insight into the causes of death in the herds studied, but also in high-risk periods for spontaneous sodic mortality. Two periods stood out in particular.


"25 percent of the dead sows in the study died in the period 0-5 days from farrowing, but also the period at the end of lactation, ie about three weeks after farrowing, has proved to be a high-risk period.

The most frequent cause of death, liver rotation, occurs throughout the lactation period, but there seem to be more sows dying late in the lactation period than around farrowing, "Hanne Kongsted elaborates.
