Feeding weaning pigs
Weighing the smallest piglets by weaning gives a better opportunity to feed them properly. It sounds simple, but is something that is far from always happening.
In these 'virus times' I often find that the smallest weaned pigs in even a team of good pigs are very small.
When reviewing feed mixes and prescriptions, it is clear that the smallest often get too little a mix or get very little of the right mix.
Pigs of 3.5 to 4.5 kg need a lot of animal protein, e.g. 12 to 20 percent milk powder.
If they are to catch up with the other pigs in the team, they must have more FE and optimal local environment.
A good way to adapt the mixture to the pigs is to weigh the smallest three to four pigs in a path. Their weight determines what mixture they should have. Therefore, weigh the smallest pigs in the team each week until they are over the biggest piggy mix (typically at a weight of 15 kg).
